Ethan Milne is a grade 11 student from Goderich District Collegiate Institute in Goderich, Ontario. He has participated in 3 Canada-Wide science fairs, winning 2 bronze medals, and is going back for a fourth year in May. In 2014 he won a bronze medal at CWSF for his invention called “The Ped-E-Board (Pediatric Electronic Board), and was published in the medical journal “Annals of Emergency Medicine,” and was the youngest presenter that year at the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) annual meeting in Chicago. The Ped-E-Board is a solution to the weight estimation problems during emergency resuscitation for children where taking weight through conventional means is impossible. The current gold standard is a length-based weight estimation tool called the Broselow Tape. However, both Ethan’s previous studies and many others have shown the Broselow Tape to be inaccurate by about 10% almost half the time, with a tendency to underestimate weight. This is caused by the worldwide childhood obesity epidemic and leads to children receiving incorrect drug dosages that could be potentially fatal. It is a normal EMS spine board with a weight scale inside of it that can connect to your phone via bluetooth to tell you the correct drug dosage for a child. He looks forward to finishing the patent process and mass producing his invention to save children’s lives.

Ethan believes in greater encouragement for young adults to go into STEM fields and improve the world. Some of his hobbies include reading terrible science fiction books, trying to fix his horrific hair, always advancing his alliteration avocation, and developing horrendous puns that should never see the light of day.
