Cassey Deveau

Cassey Deveau is currently a grade 12 student at Cape Breton Highlands Academy from Belle Côte, Nova Scotia. Cassey has always had an interest in science, especially in the chemistry and biology fields. Her main interest is in environmental sciences and she has been involved with her local environment club for many years. She has also been entering the local science fairs for 8 years. This year her project “The Friendly Fire-Retardant” tested alginate as a possible alternative to the current hazardous flame retardants in common household materials. This was the first year Cassey has won a medal at her regional fair and been able to attend the Canada Wide Science Fair. She received a gold medal in the environmental category at regionals, as well as the engineering award, and the St.FX chemistry award. At the CWSF 2014 in Windsor, Ontario she had an amazing experience. She is very grateful to have been given the opportunity to spend a week surrounded by science, and most importantly by science lovers! She was one of the two medal winners from Cape Breton receiving a bronze medal. Casey’s interests outside of science are sports, especially basketball, softball and volleyball, as well as music. She enjoys playing the piano and guitar in he spare time. Although she does not plan on studying sciences at university, Cassey plans to keep science as a strong interest in her life.
